I'm getting ready for September when we will be starting the tree banding project. What is the best way to help students identify the trees on our school campus?
The first thing is to make sure your students really understand how to identify when a new leaf starts or else they won't be able to distinguish between a compound and simple leaf.
For middle school/high school students, I like the Arbor Day What Tree Is That guide.
For younger students, I would pre-identify the trees and make up a simpler guide.
A lot (most?) tree guides use leaf shape and fruit to help identify. If you are identifying out of season that might be challenging to students.
All the best!
